Lost in “progression”

February 6, 2010 by brnsknspeaks

The saying usually goes I’m “lost in translation” but for me I’ve been “lost in progression”. I measured my success by the progress I made. TO ME, that wasn’t much or enough until my recent revelation. I was reminded that no one ever said pursuing my dreams was going to be easy. I’ve been humbled. I’ve been discouraged. I’ve felt weak mentally. I’ve wanted to give up BUT it was revealed to me (in different ways) that my success was not the destination but the JOURNEY itself. I challenge those who are/were “lost in progression” such as myself, to keep fighting every thought, person, or circumstance that will not nurture your true desires or manifest positivity in your life. I will continue to chart my “progress”. Feel free to join me. Until next time Brn Skn speaks…

February 3, 2010 by brnsknspeaks

Janks Morton

Newest release from Janks Morton, called Why He Hates You, has received praise from CNN Education Contributor, Dr. Steve Perry, radio personality and psychotherapist Dr. Melva Green, and many more.  This book has been reviewed as a book that will change the conversation about Black America.  In our one-on-one conversation, he revealed that “in order to restore the community, we must restore the family, and in order to restore the family, we must restore the men.”  Hear more of my interview with him.  Until next time Brn Skn speaks…

Music on my Radar: K’naan

February 1, 2010 by brnsknspeaks

Another artist on my radar is K’naan.  I stumbled across his performance on PBS on a show called Austin City Limits. Similar to MTV Unplugged, I vibed with the show instantly.  After hearing him perform “Somalia” and being that I LISTEN to lyrics, I knew I had to share. His album, Troubadour, is an infusion of hip-hop, alternative rap, and realness. Check out his performance to really understand what I’m talking about. Until next time Brn Skn speaks…

My Grammy wrap-up

February 1, 2010 by brnsknspeaks

I’ve always been weary about award shows and the people behind the voting.  The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards were eh…and when I say eh I mean I wasn’t really impressed. I already sounded off about hip-hop categories not being televised but some things I had to shake my head to.  It’s bad enough that the same people win these awards but seeing Drake, Eminem, and Lil’ Wayne perform was the last straw for me.  CBS felt the need to mute a good chunk of their performance, anticipating the worst. The only part I could enjoy was Travis Barker killing those drums and no comment to the “Album of the Year” recipient.  All I will say is the Recording Academy needs to get it together.  Until next time Brn Skn speaks…
